Living in the same community they served, Drs. Shah and Elizabeth Khan witnessed firsthand the hardships faced by people in rural areas who couldn’t get the care they needed. When they welcomed their first child, they, too, felt the strain: long drives for routine appointments, extended wait times for specialists, and a health system that often fell short—both for patients and for clinicians. This was the turning point: they realized a new model was not just possible—but necessary. After working in an HIV/AIDS clinic in Ghana and presenting clinical research across the U.S., Dr. Khan returned to serve patients in rural California. There, the couple experienced the same broken healthcare systems as their patients.
